Running Counter Workstations in BTM Layout: Built for Round-the-Clock Use

A desk used by one person for eight hours a day sees roughly 2,000 hours of use a year. The same desk on a three-shift operation sees around 6,000, used by three different people who have no individual sense of ownership over it. Everything wears three times faster, and the things that wear are not the things people inspect when buying.

If you run continuous or shift-based operations, this should change your specification. Running counter workstations are common in these environments, and they are frequently bought to an ordinary office standard.

What wears faster on a shift-worked counter

The front edge. Forearms rest on it constantly. On a shift operation it is in contact with skin for most of 24 hours. Thin edge banding delaminates from the combination of pressure, heat and moisture, and once the glue line opens the edge lifts.

The surface in front of the keyboard. Abrasion from forearms and hands wears the laminate’s protective layer. On a matt finish this shows as a polished patch; on a gloss finish as a dulled one. Either way it appears in the same place on every seat, which makes it look like a manufacturing defect rather than wear.

Grommet edges and cable openings. Cables are pulled and repositioned by each incoming shift. Unlined grommets chip.

Understructure fixings. Continuous occupation means continuous small movement. Fixings that would stay tight for years on an eight-hour desk work loose.

Chair contact points. With three occupants a day, chair arms hit the counter edge three times as often.

Specification for continuous operation

• Worktop: a higher-wear laminate grade than standard office specification, with a matt or textured finish that hides abrasion better than gloss.
• Edge: 3 mm PUR-glued edge band, radiused, on the front edge specifically. This is the highest-value single upgrade for shift use.
• Grommets: lined metal or hard plastic, not routed openings in bare board.
• Structure: metal-to-metal fixings with threaded inserts, not screws into board. Check-tighten as part of a maintenance routine.
• Levelling feet: with a locking nut, so they cannot vibrate loose.

Hygiene between shifts

A desk handed from one person to the next several times a day is a shared surface, and it will be cleaned with something. The finish has to tolerate routine wiping with a cleaning agent, repeatedly, without clouding or lifting at the edges. This is another argument for a properly sealed edge — a lifted edge lets cleaning fluid into the board core, and once the core swells there is no repair.

Provide somewhere to put a cleaning kit at the counter, and cable management that does not create crevices which cannot be wiped.

Personal storage on a shared counter

The same issue arises as with any shared desk: the person occupying the seat has belongings, and the counter is not theirs. A lockable pedestal or locker assigned per person rather than per seat is the correct answer. Without it, bags go under the counter and stay there through the next shift.

Lighting and the night shift

A counter that works under daytime conditions may be poorly lit at 3 am when the building’s general lighting is reduced. Task lighting at the counter — a strip under a shelf or an overhead unit — is worth planning at the same time as the furniture, because it needs the same power provision.
