A panel base workstation is often sold on the idea of privacy, but privacy is not one thing. What the panel is doing

The single most common specification error is choosing 1200 mm and expecting the acoustic result of 1650 mm. A panel only attenuates sound it physically interrupts. Below the ear height of a seated speaker, it does very little.
Core and finish options
The panel core determines both weight and acoustic behaviour. A hollow panel with sheet infill is light and cheap but reflects sound. A panel with a mineral wool or dense infill absorbs it. On the face, you have three practical choices:
- Fabric tiles — absorb sound, take pins, and are the right choice where people post reference material
- Laminate tiles — wipe clean, resist scuffing at trolley height, hard acoustically
- Glazed upper tiles — return daylight to the interior of the floorplate without dropping panel height
Mixing them is usually the correct answer: laminate low where feet and bags hit, fabric at torso height, glass on top.
