An ESD table is not a table with a special laminate on it. It is one component in a grounding path, and if any part of that path is missing or broken, the table provides no protection at all — while looking exactly as though it does. That is the dangerous part: an ESD workstation with a disconnected ground gives the operator confidence without protection.

What electrostatic discharge does

Static builds on insulated surfaces and on people through ordinary movement — walking, sliding a component across a bench, removing packaging. Voltages of several thousand volts are routine and are not felt below roughly 3,000 V.

Sensitive semiconductor devices can be damaged at a few tens of volts. That means a discharge far too small to notice can destroy or degrade a component. Degraded parts often pass initial testing and fail later in service, which is why ESD control matters most for reliability rather than immediate yield.

The grounding path, component by component

Every element below must be present and connected, in sequence:

1. The work surface. A static-dissipative laminate or mat, with a surface resistance high enough to prevent a rapid discharge but low enough to bleed charge away — typically in the 10⁶ to 10⁹ ohm range. Insulative (ordinary) laminate is not acceptable; conductive metal is also wrong, because it discharges too fast.

2. Surface-to-stud connection. The dissipative layer must connect to a grounding stud on the table. This connection is a physical component that can corrode or work loose.

3. Grounding cord. From the stud to the earth point, usually incorporating a 1 megohm resistor for operator safety, so that a person is never a low-resistance path to earth.

4. Common point ground. A bonding block where the surface, the operator wrist strap, the shelf, and any equipment ground all connect together. Bonding everything to a common point matters as much as grounding itself — two items at different potentials will discharge to each other even if both are individually “earthed”.

5. Building earth. A verified earth connection. This is where installations most often fail, because the socket everyone assumed was earthed may not be.

6. The operator. A wrist strap connected to the common point ground, or ESD footwear on a dissipative floor. Without this, the operator is the largest charge source in the workstation.

The rest of the workstation

The table is not the only element that needs specifying:

  • Frame: ESD tables are typically steel-framed, with the frame bonded to the common point.
  • Shelving and uprights: anything on the bench that a component may touch should be dissipative.
  • Chairs: ESD chairs with conductive castors and a dissipative upholstery, providing a path from the operator through the chair to the floor.
  • Flooring: a dissipative floor is required if footwear grounding is used instead of wrist straps.
  • Storage and bins: ESD-safe containers, not ordinary plastic — ordinary plastic bins are strong charge generators.

Testing is not optional

An ESD installation must be verified, not assumed. Surface resistance to ground should be measured at commissioning and re-checked periodically, because connections corrode, cords break internally, and mats degrade with cleaning. Cleaning matters too: ordinary cleaning agents can leave an insulating film on a dissipative mat that defeats it entirely.
