How to size an office working table for Bommanahalli offices — worksurface depths, leg clearance, monitor distance and storage options, made in our own workshop.
Most complaints about a work desk are not really about the desk. They are about a dimension somebody guessed at. The monitor sits too close because the top is 500 mm deep instead of 600. A drawer unit was pushed under the desk and now nobody can cross their legs. The desk itself is fine; the numbers behind it were never checked.

Start with the depth, not the width
Width is what people quote — 1200, 1500, 1800. Depth is what determines whether the desk is comfortable.
A flat-panel monitor needs roughly 500-700 mm between the eye and the screen for a person not to lean back. If the worksurface is only 500 mm deep, the screen ends up almost at the front edge of the table and the user pushes their chair away, losing arm support. A 600 mm depth handles a single monitor comfortably. If the role involves dual monitors or a large drawing screen, 750 mm is the honest minimum.

Leg space is the part people forget
Under the top, the usable knee zone should stay clear for at least 600 mm of width and around 600 mm of depth. That sounds obvious until a mobile pedestal, a CPU holder and a power box all get added to the same bay. Decide where the pedestal lives before the table is made — under the top, at the end as a support, or standing free against a partition. Each option changes the understructure we build.
Understructure options
- MS box-section legs with adjustable levellers — the most forgiving choice on floors that are not perfectly level, which covers a lot of older commercial premises around Bommanahalli.
- Panel-side supports in the same board and laminate as the top — cleaner look, lower cost, but fixes the desk position permanently.
- Modesty panel in board or perforated metal — worth including for any desk facing a walkway or reception area.
Surfaces and edges
Tops are built from pre-laminated board or plywood with a laminate face, depending on the finish and the loading. The detail that decides how the desk looks in year three is the edge. A properly pressed 2 mm PVC edge band on all four sides resists the chipping that starts at the front lip where forearms rest and where chair arms knock the table. Thin edging is where cheap desks fail first.

Because the workshop is in Bommanahalli, we can measure your floor, check column positions and power outlets, and adjust sizes before anything is cut. A desk that is 50 mm too wide for a bay is scrap; a desk drawn to the bay is furniture.
