M.D Table in Hebbal — Planning an Executive Cabin That Works

An MD table is rarely a single piece of furniture. It is a small system: a main top, a side return, a back credenza, and sometimes a discussion extension where two or three people can sit without moving to a meeting room. Buying only the table and adding the rest later is how executive cabins end up looking assembled rather than designed.

Sizing against the cabin, not the catalogue

The most common mistake in an executive cabin is a table that is correct in isolation and wrong in the room. A 2400 mm table in a 3.6 m wide cabin leaves barely 600 mm on either side — not enough for a visitor chair to be pulled back.

Work backwards from the room:

• Leave 900 mm minimum behind the table for the chair to recline and the user to stand.
• Leave 1000-1200 mm in front for visitor chairs plus a walking path.
• If a back credenza is planned, allow another 450-500 mm of depth against the rear wall.

For a typical 3.6 × 4.5 m cabin, a 1800-2100 mm main top with a 900 mm side return usually sits comfortably. Cabins above 4.5 m wide can carry 2400 mm and a discussion extension.

The three units worth specifying together

Main top. This is where the visual weight sits. A thicker top profile — a 25 mm board with a built-up edge, or a stepped double-top — reads as more substantial than a flat 18 mm slab, without costing much more.

Side return. Takes the keyboard, phone and daily paperwork so the main top stays clear. This is the piece that actually keeps an executive desk looking tidy. Height should match the main top exactly; a step of even 5 mm is visible.

Back credenza. Closed shutters for files, one or two drawers, and an open bay if a printer or water carafe needs a home. Because it sits behind the user, it is the natural place to hide power and data terminations.

Finish combinations that hold up

Executive cabins usually want warmth without maintenance headaches. The combinations that work:

• Wood-grain laminate on the main top and credenza, with a matt PU-finished edge detail.
• Two-tone: a darker base or gable with a lighter top, which visually lightens a large table.
• A leather-look or fabric-faced modesty panel front, which softens the face of the table toward visitors.

Glass tops are requested often. They look sharp for a month and then show every fingerprint under cabin downlights. If glass is wanted, an inset panel within a laminate frame ages far better than a full glass overlay.

Cable and power planning

An MD table carries a laptop, a monitor, a desk phone, a charger and often a video-conference camera. Plan a flush-mounted power and data box on the main top, a wire management channel down one leg, and a raceway in the credenza. Retrofitting this after the table is polished always looks like an afterthought.
