Library Tables in Hebbal: Dimensions for Reading and Study

Library tables look like the simplest furniture in an institution and are among the most demanding to get right, because they have to work for two incompatible activities: reading a book, and working on a laptop. The dimensions that suit one do not automatically suit the other, and most reading rooms end up furnished for whichever one the specifier had in mind.
Working dimensions
Depth: 600 mm per reader minimum, 750 mm preferred. A book lying open occupies roughly 450–500 mm of depth. A laptop with a notebook beside it needs 600 mm. At 600 mm depth on a shared double-sided table, two readers facing each other have their materials meeting in the middle — workable for books, awkward with screens.
Width per reader: 750 mm minimum, 900 mm comfortable. Below 750 mm, adjacent readers’ materials overlap. In a study hall where readers spread reference material, 900 mm is the honest figure.
Height: 750 mm. Standard. For school-age users, this drops — a table sized for a 16-year-old is wrong for a 10-year-old, and mixed-age libraries should have at least two heights.
Knee clearance: 650 mm minimum height, 600 mm width. Any rail, stretcher or under-shelf must sit outside this.

Carrel dividers
A carrel divider — a screen down the centre and often between adjacent readers — is the single most effective way to make a reading room feel private and quiet. It works because it removes eye contact, and eye contact is what makes people conscious of each other.
Height matters. A divider at 300 mm above the table does nothing. At 450–500 mm above the table it blocks the view of a seated neighbour’s face while leaving the room open above. Above 600 mm, a reading hall starts to feel like a set of boxes, which is appropriate for an exam-focused study room and oppressive for a general library.
Power, which is now essential
A reading table without power provision is a table that will have extension leads run to it within a month. Modern study is laptop study, and battery life is not a reason to omit outlets.
Practical provision:
- One twin outlet per reader position, or at minimum one per two positions
- A USB charging point per position, which handles a large share of the demand
- Cabling routed inside the table structure, not clipped underneath
- Outlets positioned so cables do not cross the reading surface
On a double-sided table, a central spine carrying power to both sides is the tidiest arrangement and also gives a natural place to mount the carrel divider.
Construction for institutional use
Library tables are heavily used, rarely moved, and cleaned frequently. Priorities:
- A thick, stable top — reading tables should not flex when leaned on. Flexing tables are distracting in a silent room.
- Solid, well-braced legs. Racking is the most common institutional table failure.
- Sealed edges and rounded corners — reading rooms are navigated by people looking at books rather than where they are going.
- Felt or nylon glides to prevent scraping noise, which carries enormously in a quiet room.
Hebbal institutions
Hebbal and the northern corridor hold a range of schools, colleges and training institutions alongside corporate campuses with their own resource rooms. The specification question that separates them is age range: an institution serving a wide age band needs at least two table heights and correspondingly sized chairs, and a single standard height across a school library disadvantages the youngest users significantly.
