Two stages decide whether custom furniture fits: the day someone measures, and the day someone installs. Everything in between is production, and production is only ever as good as the numbers it was given.

Both stages are usually invisible to the customer, which is why they are worth describing.

What a proper site survey records

A tape measure across a wall is not a survey. A survey that will support manufacturing records:

Wall lengths at three heights — at floor, at 1000 mm, and at ceiling. Older Basavanagudi buildings have masonry walls that are not plumb, and a wardrobe made to the floor dimension will not fit at the top.

Diagonals of the space, to check whether corners are square. A 3 m run against a corner that is two degrees out shows a 100 mm discrepancy at the far end.

Floor level across the run, using a level or a laser. This sets how much leveller travel is needed and how deep the scribed plinth has to be.

Ceiling height at both ends of any full-height unit.

Obstructions: skirting profile and height, electrical points and switch positions, plumbing points, AC piping, window and door reveals, beam soffits, and which way doors swing.

Access route: door widths, corridor turns, stair width and headroom, lift internal dimensions and door opening. This determines whether units come assembled or in parts — a decision that has to be made before production, not on delivery day.

From survey to drawing

The measured data goes into a fabrication drawing for each unit: overall sizes, internal partition positions, board thickness, hardware, laminate code, and where the scribe fillers sit. You approve that drawing and physical laminate samples before anything is cut.

The reason for physical samples is simple: laminate looks different in a workshop under tube light, in a printed catalogue, and in your room at 4 p.m. Only the last one matters.

Installation day

Before the team arrives: the room should be cleared, painting complete and dry, flooring laid, and electrical points live. Furniture installed before painting gets paint on it; furniture installed before flooring has to be lifted again.

The sequence:

1. Units carried in and positioned, protective film left on
2. Carcasses levelled — every unit, against a level, not by eye
3. Carcasses joined to each other and, where needed, anchored to the wall
4. Scribe fillers cut to the actual wall profile and fitted
5. Shutters hung and aligned — gaps set consistently across the run
6. Drawers fitted, slides adjusted, locks tested
7. Handles and internal accessories fitted
8. Plinth scribed to the floor and fitted
9. Protective film removed, surfaces cleaned, debris removed

Steps 2 and 5 are what separate a good installation from a mediocre one. Shutter gap alignment across a run is the detail your eye reads first, and it is entirely down to the time spent adjusting hinges.

The handover walk

Walk the finished work with the installer. Check: every shutter opens and closes fully, drawers run smoothly to full extension, locks turn, no laminate scuffs, edge banding intact at every corner, and units sit level with no rocking. Anything noted should be listed and dated.
