Particle board, MDF, HDHMR and plywood compared for furniture in Bannerghatta homes and offices: screw holding, moisture behaviour, weight, finish and where each belongs.
Two pieces of furniture can look identical, cost 40% apart, and behave completely differently in year four. The difference is almost always the substrate — the board under the laminate — and it is invisible once the unit is finished.
Here is how the common substrates actually differ, and where each one belongs.
Particle board (pre-laminated)
Wood chips bonded with resin and pressed, usually supplied with laminate already applied to both faces.
- Screw holding: moderate. Fine for hinges and slides installed once. Repeated removal and refitting strips the hole.
- Moisture: poor. Once water enters the core, the board swells and never recovers.
- Weight: heavy for its strength.
- Where it belongs: dry office interiors, wardrobe carcasses, storage units away from water. It is the workhorse material and there is nothing wrong with it in the right place.
MDF
Fine wood fibres pressed into a dense, homogeneous board with no grain.
- Screw holding: good on the face, weaker on the edge — edge-screwed joints in MDF need dowels or confirmat screws.
- Moisture: poor unless the moisture-resistant grade is specified.
- Finish: the best of the four. Because MDF has no grain and machines cleanly, it is the correct choice for routed shutters, painted or PU-finished surfaces, and any profiled edge.
- Where it belongs: shutters, decorative panels, anything with a moulded or painted finish.
HDHMR
A denser, higher-moisture-resistant engineered board.
- Screw holding: noticeably better than particle board or standard MDF.
- Moisture: substantially better, though not equivalent to marine plywood.
- Where it belongs: kitchen shutters, wardrobe carcasses in humid rooms, high-use storage where hinges will be loaded.
Plywood
Cross-laminated veneers. Sold in grades, and the grade is what you are buying — the word “plywood” alone tells you almost nothing.
- Screw holding: the best of the four, in face and edge.
- Moisture: good in BWR grade, excellent in BWP/marine grade.
- Weight and strength: best strength-to-weight, so it spans further without sagging.
- Where it belongs: kitchen base units, utility and bathroom vanities, long unsupported shelves, and any structural element.
A practical allocation
For a typical Bannerghatta home or office project, we would generally use:

Nothing on that list is a compromise. Using plywood everywhere would raise cost significantly for no benefit in a dry office cupboard; using particle board in a kitchen base is where trouble starts.
