M.D. Side Storage in Doddanekkundi: The Credenza in an Executive Cabin

The unit behind or beside an executive desk is usually called side storage, but its traditional name — credenza — is more descriptive of what it actually does. It is not primarily a filing cabinet. It is the piece that lets the desk stay clear, and a clear desk is most of what makes an executive cabin look like one.
The four functions
Storage out of sight. Everything the occupant needs during the day but does not want visible: files, stationery, a bag, a spare set of documents. If it lives on the desk instead, the desk is never presentable.
A set-down surface. The credenza top is where things land — documents in transit, a tray, a laptop being unpacked. This is the function that keeps the desk clear, and it only works if the top is genuinely clear itself.
Display. Awards, photographs, a plant, whatever the occupant chooses to show. This is a real function in a room where visitors sit, and it needs a designated area rather than competing with the set-down zone.
Screening. A credenza behind the desk gives the seated occupant a defined backdrop and hides the wall behind them. Visually it completes the room.
Trying to do all four on a single 1200 mm unit fails. A credenza should be long — typically 1800–2400 mm — precisely so that the functions can be zoned along its length.
Zoning along the length
A workable division of a 2100 mm credenza:

Adding a section of open shelving is a choice, not an improvement. Open shelving in an executive cabin looks good on day one and accumulates within a month. Doors are more forgiving of real use.
Dimensions and clearances
Depth: 450–500 mm. Deeper wastes floor and puts contents out of reach; shallower will not take a lever arch file front to back.
Height: 750 mm to match desk height if the credenza sits alongside, or 750–900 mm if it sits behind. Behind the desk, the credenza top should be at or slightly above desk height so the occupant can turn and use it without repositioning the chair.
Clearance from the desk: 1000 mm minimum. This is the zone the chair occupies. Below 900 mm the chair hits the credenza, and it will, repeatedly, and the credenza doors will show it.
Power at the credenza
The credenza is where the printer, the shredder and the charging devices end up. Plan an outlet in or behind it at the design stage. Retrofitting means either an extension lead across the floor or a hole cut in a finished panel.
Matching the desk
An executive cabin is judged as a set. The credenza, desk and any storage must share the finish, the edge detail and the hardware style. That means one manufacturing run — laminate batches vary, veneer varies more, and two units ordered six months apart will not match no matter how carefully the code is recorded.
Doddanekkundi offices
Doddanekkundi and the adjacent technology and industrial belt hold a large number of company offices attached to operational sites — cabins that receive vendors, auditors and visiting management regularly.
