Meeting Room Tables in KR Puram: Modular Tables That Reconfigure

Most offices have fewer meeting rooms than they need and cannot get more, because meeting rooms are the most expensive square metres in a fit-out. The practical response is not another room — it is making the room you have serve more than one purpose. That is a furniture problem, and a fixed single-slab conference table is the thing standing in the way.

What a modular table system is

Instead of one large table, the room is furnished with a set of smaller tables designed to be joined. Typically:

• Rectangular units at 1500 × 750 mm or 1800 × 750 mm
• Optional half-round or trapezoidal end units
• Folding legs or a quick-release leg mechanism
• Linking clamps that pull adjacent tops tight so joints do not show
• Castors with brakes, or glides where the floor is delicate

Six 1500 mm units join into a 4.5 m boardroom table, split into three pairs for a workshop, line up in rows for training, or go against the wall entirely for a standing event.

The four common configurations

Boardroom. All units joined in a single long rectangle. Formal, one conversation, everyone at one table.

Classroom / training. Units in parallel rows all facing a screen. Delegates have a writing surface and a clear view forward.

U-shape. Units forming three sides open toward a screen or presenter. The best format for facilitated sessions with 12–18 people, and impossible with a fixed table.

Clusters. Pairs or triples spread across the room for group work, then re-joined afterwards.

A room that can do all four is worth substantially more than a room that can do one.

What determines whether it actually gets used

Reconfigurable furniture only delivers if reconfiguring is easy enough that people bother. In practice that means:

Weight per unit. A single person should be able to move one table. Above about 25 kg they will not, and the room will stay in whatever configuration it was left in.

Leg mechanism. Folding legs must operate without tools and lock positively. A mechanism that requires two people to fold defeats the purpose.

Alignment. Linking hardware must pull tops flush. Tables that sit 3 mm proud of each other look worse than a single fixed table ever would.

Storage. Folded tables need somewhere to go — a nesting stack against a wall or in a store. If there is nowhere to put them, they end up in a corridor.

The honest downside

A modular table has visible joints and is not as impressive as a single-piece boardroom table. If the room’s main function is receiving senior clients, buy the fixed table and accept the reduced flexibility. If the room is an internal working room used ten times a week for different purposes, the modular system will earn its cost within months.

Many offices resolve this by having one fixed table in the client-facing room and modular systems everywhere else.
