The Indian Institute of Technology — IITI.

What they needed

Laboratory tables for a working research environment. A research lab bench is a piece of equipment: it holds instruments steady, takes whatever gets spilled on it, and stays rigid through years of daily use. Standard tables do not do that job, so the requirement was for lab tables built to the specific conditions of the room.

Design focused on durability, precision and function in that order. Surfaces were specified against the exposure the tables would actually see, and storage was built into the bench rather than added as separate units, which keeps the floor clear and the lab easier to clean.

The notable part

Specialised institutional furniture leaves little room for approximation. Lab benches have to arrive at the right height, in the right lengths, with services landing where the drawing says — and a lab under refurbishment usually has a hard date attached, because teaching or research resumes whether the furniture is ready or not.

We manufactured to the room drawing at our Bommanahalli workshop and delivered the tables complete. The client’s assessment was that the product quality exceeded what they had expected.

The relationship continued afterwards: the lab table delivery was followed by a further workstation order at IIIT College.
